Yes, it’s true, nitrogen comprises something close to 78% of the Earth’s atmosphere. But, I think it is important to remember that in modern times, some of the nitrogen that has vastly increased in our environment is that due to fertilizer. It’s everywhere, in heavy doses, and it gets washed into our water supplies, rivers and estuaries. We pile it on in order to cheaply increase the amount of food that we can squeeze out of each acre of land. However, it does have negative consequences, especially when it comes to algal blooms and ocean life in general. We need to find a better way to grow our food, and yes, I know that is not easy and is very controversial. Still, it seems to be reducing the biodiversity of plants, and that is something we cannot afford to tolerate.
